Mao is Dead

The work is based on the recording of the performance “Mao is Dead” (2010). It is a close-up of the artist’s lips reading a text from the book “Anarchy in the UKR” by Serhij Żadan. The video image is simultaneously displayed on an open book, while the two pages and the video image are simultaneously transmitted through a micro-camera to a second video projector. The combination of reading lips and pages from Serhij’s book is displayed in the corner of the gallery. The entire installation is placed on a typical table from the 1970s, cut through with a chainsaw. The artist’s lips are upside down.

Praca oparta na zapisie performance’u „Mao is Dead” (2010). Jest to zbliżenie ust artysty czytającego tekst z książki „Anarchy in the UKR” autorstwa Serhija Żadana. Obraz wideo jest równocześnie wyświetlany na otwartej książce, a dwie strony oraz obraz wideo są jednocześnie przekazywane przez mikrokamerę do drugiego projektora wideo. Połączenie czytających ust i stron z książki Serhija jest wyświetlane w rogu galerii. Cała instalacja umieszczona jest na typowym biurku z lat 70., przeciętym piłą łańcuchową. Usta artysty są odwrócone do góry nogami.

The reading text / Czytany tekst (Serhij Żadan, “Anarchy in the UKR”):

10. Left march! Never be interested in politics, don’t read newspapers, don’t listen to the radio — knock the kinescope out of your TV set and put a colourful portrait of Mao or Fidel in its place. Don’t let them fuck you over! Don’t plug into the network — don’t trust the internet, for it is an instrument of control. Don’t go to elections (you have no candidate anyway), don’t support democracy. Don’t attend rallies or political meetings! Don’t join any party, and if you must — sell your vote only to the social democrats (because at least they pretend to change something). Don’t talk about parliament or the president (“mine” or “yours”? — a fiction!), don’t support the right wing — in this country there is simply no normal right wing. Don’t sign any petitions to the president (that’s not your president!) and never wave at a governor, whom you will likely never meet on the street anyway. Show no interest in trade union activity either — they merely exploit you, and their leaders were bought long ago or are dead! Don’t support national revival (after all you are an enemy of the system: a Jew, a homosexual and a fascist all at once), because the first to be hanged will be you. Politics is bought — the newspapers, radio and television serve the powers that be (you know the truth about TV yourself!). Mao is dead, and Fidel has long since left the scene… Don’t let them fuck you over — elections are a farce, democracy has been dead for years. Parliament? Bought. President? A puppet! The right wing is bought too (in this country there is no normal right wing). Petitions are paid for in advance, and your “candidate” sold himself to the highest bidder. Trade unions? All long corrupted — their leaders are either dead or serve the system! National revival is a myth (they just want to hang you by the feet at the opera… tie a noose and drop you from an old office chair so everyone can see your defenceless carcass swaying in the wind). They think ONLY about you — you whores! Whores!!! In the newspapers (whores!), the radio (whores!) and the television (“Mao, Fidel… fuck it!”). On the network — nothing but faggots and spies. At the elections? Nothing but fraud — democracy has whored itself out completely, parliament is a brothel! The President (fuck!) is not yours; the right wing (“the governor”, “your candidate”) only sells you out too. What trade unions?! What revival?! Whores!!!! And after all this… you’re supposed NOT TO SELL YOURSELF!

10. Lewy marsz! Nigdy nie interesuj się polityką, nie czytaj gazet, nie słuchaj radia, wybij kineskop ze swojego telewizora i wstaw tam kolorowy portret Mao albo Fidela. Nie dawaj im robić cię w chuja! Nie podłączaj się do sieci — nie ufaj internetowi, bo to narzędzie kontroli; nie chodź na wybory (nie masz przecież kandydata), nie wspieraj demokracji. Nie bywaj na mityngach i wiecach politycznych! Nie wstępuj do partii, a jeśli już musisz — sprzedawaj swój głos tylko socjaldemokratom (bo oni przynajmniej udają, że coś zmieniają). Nie rozmawiaj o parlamencie ani prezydencie („Mój” czy „twój”? To fikcja!), nie popieraj prawicy — w tym kraju normalnej prawicy po prostu nie ma. Nie podpisuj żadnych petycji do prezydenta (to nie twój prezydent!) i nigdy nie machaj ręką gubernatorowi, którego zresztą pewnie nigdy nie spotkasz na ulicy. Nie wykazuj też żadnego zainteresowania działalnością związków zawodowych — one tylko cię wykorzystują, a ich liderzy dawno są kupieni albo martwi! Nie popieraj odrodzenia narodowego (jesteś przecież wrogiem systemu: Żydem, homoseksualistą i faszystą jednocześnie), bo pierwszego powieszą właśnie ciebie. Polityka jest kupiona — gazety, radio i telewizja są na usługach władzy (sam dobrze znasz prawdę o TV!). Mao nie żyje, Fidel też już dawno zszedł ze sceny… Nie daj się robić w chuja — wybory to farsa, demokracja jest martwa od lat. Parlament? Kupiony. Prezydent? Marionetka! Prawica też kupiona (w tym kraju nie ma normalnej prawicy). Petycje są opłacane z góry, a twój „kandydat” sprzedał się temu, kto więcej zapłaci. Związki zawodowe? Wszystkie dawno skorumpowane — ich liderzy albo już nie żyją, albo są na usługach systemu! Odrodzenie narodowe to mit (chcą cię tylko powiesić za nogi przy operze… zawiązać pętlę i zrzucić ze starego biurowego krzesła tak, żeby wszyscy widzieli twoją bezbronną tuszę bujającą się na wietrze). Oni myślą TYLKO o tobie — kurwy! Kurwy!!! W gazetach (kurwy!), radiu (kurwy!) i telewizji („Mao, Fidel… pierdolona!”). W sieci same pedały i szpiedzy. Na wyborach? Same oszustwa — demokracja się skurwiła do cna, parlament to burdel! Prezydent (kurwa!) nie jest twój; prawica („gubernator”, „twój kandydat”) też tylko cię sprzeda. Jakie związki zawodowe?! Jakie odrodzenie? Kurwy!!!! I po tym wszystkim… masz się NIE SPRZEDAĆ!
