A multimedia opera for the age of artificial intelligence — a CUKTAI project fusing performance, video installation, electronic music and an audiovisual libretto. Live bodies are interrogated by machines; the machine spirit sings; humans drift through the datasphere looking for meaning and finding, instead, an interface.

Concept / Koncepcja

The world is made of Words — and if you know the words the world is made of, you can make of them whatever you choose. But access to the Words now requires a Seal. The 2026 libretto stages the tension between authority, knowledge and the seal: the licence, the exception, the API — the quiet machinery of who gets to speak, think, and exist. Four voices carry the drama: CYBORG (the bio-robot, the android human), MACHINE (AI, the bit, machine consciousness), ALIENS (unimaginable minds from another register), and HUMAN (user, discoverer, victim).

Świat jest stworzony ze Słów — a jeśli znasz słowa, z których świat jest stworzony, możesz stworzyć z nich, co tylko zechcesz. Ale dostęp do Słów wymaga teraz Pieczęci. Libretto 2026 wystawia napięcie między władzą, wiedzą i pieczęcią: licencją, wyjątkiem, API — cichą machiną, która decyduje, kto może mówić, myśleć i istnieć. Dramat niosą cztery głosy: CYBORG (sztuczny człowiek — biorobot — android), MACHINE (AI — bit — świadomość-maszyna), ALIENS (umysły nie-wyobrażalne, inny wymiar) i HUMAN (użytkownik — odkrywca — ofiara).

Historical stagings / Inscenizacje historyczne (1996–1997)

Technopera was first staged at the turn of the millennium, a generation before the AI turn — as an audiovisual libretto of 217 video files sampling the collective techno-imagination: Kubrick’s 2001, TRON, Cronenberg’s Scanners, the Voight-Kampff test, Terence McKenna, Timothy Leary, film and theory cut into operatic refrain.

Technopera powstała na przełomie wieków, pokolenie przed zwrotem AI — jako audiowizualne libretto z 217 plików wideo samplujących zbiorową wyobraźnię technologiczną: Kubrickowski 2001, TRON, Scanners Cronenberga, test Voight-Kampffa, Terence’a McKennę, Timothy’ego Leary’ego, film i teorię cięte w operową repetycję.

The video version was broadcast on Polish television. A premiere planned for Gdańsk (the NOT building) did not materialise; the project was revived in 2024.

Revivals / Reaktywacje (2024–2025)

Revived from 2024 with a new libretto, and developed through a 2025 AI prototype — the opera now interrogates the very machines it once sampled. The 2024 version reworked the source bank into current form; the 2025 prototype handed parts of the drama to an artificial agent.

Reaktywowana od 2024 z nowym librettem i rozwijana przez prototyp AI z 2025 — opera przesłuchuje teraz te same maszyny, które kiedyś samplowała. Wersja 2024 przetworzyła bank źródłowy do aktualnej postaci; prototyp z 2025 oddał części dramatu sztucznemu agentowi.

WŁADZA. WIEDZA. PIECZĘĆ. — Authority. Knowledge. Seal. — the public libretto of September 13, 2026 (© CUKTAI / Piotr Wyrzykowski / Artur Kozdrowski). Structure: PROLOG + three acts. The drama moves from the void (HUMAN searching for meaning) through the future city-line, cyberspace, the endless data-centre corridor, the HAL interface, and the Voight-Kampff test, into Act III where sovereignty shifts “from the land to the algorithm” and the nightmare does not wake you — it updates in the background. The framing theme of 2026 is the Seal as the condition of access — a commentary on licences, exceptions, and the administrative machinery of AI, drawn from the theory of the stack (Bratton), the state of exception (Agamben) and the political economy of open-source AI.

Dramat przechodzi od pustki (HUMAN szuka sensu) przez futurystyczną linię miasta, cyberprzestrzeń, nieskończony korytarz centrum danych, interfejs HAL-a i test Voight-Kampffa, aż do aktu III, gdzie władza przesuwa się „z ziemi na algorytm”, a koszmar Cię nie budzi — aktualizuje się w tle. Motywem przewodnim 2026 jest Pieczęć jako warunek dostępu — komentarz do licencji, wyjątków i administracyjnej machiny AI, czerpiący z teorii stosu (Bratton), stanu wyjątkowego (Agamben) i politycznej ekonomii otwartej sztucznej inteligencji (open source).

The libretto’s source bank reads like the nervous system of the twentieth century: McKenna’s Archaic Revival (the opera’s motto since 2024), Kubrick, Cronenberg, TRON, Blade Runner, The Terminator, The Day the Earth Stood Still, BBC Four’s Heaven & Hell, Foucault’s Power/Knowledge, Lem’s Golem XIV, Harari’s Nexus, Coil, Genesis P-Orridge, David Tibet. Every line is annotated — direct quote, paraphrase, or original composition.

Bank źródłowy libretta czyta się jak układ nerwowy XX wieku: Archaic Revival McKenny (motto opery od 2024), Kubrick, Cronenberg, TRON, Blade Runner, Terminator, Dzień, w którym zatrzymała się Ziemia, Heaven & Hell BBC Four, Power/Knowledge Foucaulta, Golem XIV Lema, Nexus Harariego, Coil, Genesis P-Orridge, David Tibet. Każda linia jest adnotowana — cytat bezpośredni, parafraza lub kompozycja własna.
